I have had little links hanging out in my sidebar for some time now. I thought that maybe I could earn a couple of bucks to help pay for the site. The way Google AdSense works is it assigns a monetary amount to the links based on how many page views you have vs. how many times the links were clicked vs. a bunch of other analytical data that only Google knows about. When you reach $100 worth of hits, they send you the check.

So far I have $15 worth of AdSense money earned. At this rate, I should get my first $100 check in about 5 years. Maybe I should take the ads down.
