In this commercial from Republican John McCain he wants to inform people about how war has affected his life and that he will use his experience to make better choices if he is elected president.

“Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war. When I was five years old my father left for war. My grandfather came home from war, and died the next day. I was shot down over Vietnam and spent five years as a POW. Some of the friends I served with never came home. I hate war and I know how terrible its costs are. I’m running for President to keep the country I love safe.”

Every time this ad comes on, it sounds to me like he is saying that these things all happened to him when he was five years old:

  • his father left for war
  • his grandfather came home from war (and died the next day)
  • he was shot down over Vietnam
  • So when he was 10 years old he left Vietnam after being a POW for 5 years. What a crazy life…
Maybe he should reword this, either give his age for each event, or keep his age out of the explanation. Otherwise I am going to think that all those events happened to him at age 5.

I called McCain on his bullshit in a letter to the editor in The New York Times! I hope the McCain campaign read it.
