I am not a supporter of Proposition 8 in any way. It not only is offensive that it passed, it is offensive that it was even put on the ballot. Why is it ok to vote on human rights? Should we vote on slavery again? I don’t think so. Should we vote to see if people think different races should be allowed to marry each other? I don’t think so.
Some say that it would be difficult to ‘redefine’ what marriage is. It seems to me that the definition already includes the option of same sex marriage. I don’t see the word defining beyond the idea that two voluntary people are legally joined in the eyes of the state or their religion or both.
To those in support of Prop 8: Why does the relationship of two people other than yourself matter to you? No one is saying that you have to get married to someone of the same sex. Being gay is not a choice. If gays were allowed to be married, it would not alter your heterosexual marriage.
Allowing a couple, who just happen to be the same sex, to get married does not mean that you would also have to allow polygamists to get married too. One plus one does not equal seven. Marriage is the joining of a couple… not a couple of couples.
It is a basic human right. It is not a voting matter.

its the union of a man and a women, says the bible……….
I think it’s perfectly fine if you are not comfortable with gay marriage. I’m not asking you to marry someone of the same sex. I do not agree with using the bible to justify the LEGAL reasons why two people of the same sex can not be married. These couples are not asking to be married in the church or in a church that disagrees with their lifestyles. They are asking for LEGAL rights and one of our most important elements of our United States Constitution is the separation of Church and State. The church would define all things in the spiritual realm and the LEGAL realm would be defined by states and law.
Furthermore, if you’re going to live by scripture here’s hitting below the belt, so to speak: You can’t pick and choose so that scripture works to your advantage every time while it denies other people the same rights that you enjoy.
I have no problem with divorce or gay marriage. Divorce happens for a variety of reasons and is a personal issue for the persons and families which are affected by it and a couple’s decision to separate. In our MODERN world, it is accepted and at times necessary.
If you have a problem with gay marriage and you use the bible to throw stones, be ready for stones to come your way. Period.
Gen. 2:20-24 – we see that, from the beginning, husband and wife are joined together by God and become one body. A body cannot be dismembered and still live.
Mal. 2:16 – God says “I hate divorce.” These are strong words from our Lord. Divorce and remarriage violates the sacred marital covenant between a husband and a wife that has been ordained by God.
Matt. 19:6 – Jesus makes it clear that it is God who joins the husband and wife together, according to His will. What God joins together cannot be dissolved because God’s will is perfect and eternal.
Matt. 19:9; Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18 – Jesus says that whoever divorces and remarries another commits adultery. This is an offense against the natural law.
A thoughtful article from Newsweek using the Bible to argue in favor of legalizing gay marriage.
Personally, I think that using the Bible to justify laws and/or the creation of laws in our country is a scary idea. The Bible is a moral code for people of one particular religion. We have people from many religions and faiths present in our country. If you would like to live in a country that forms its laws based on religious teachings, you’re looking to live in a theocracy.
Examples of modern day theocracies (places you may want to live if you think a religious text should define a country’s laws and civil rights):
Iran
Israel
