This is a story of Mark Robohm who remodeled his space on the cheap. For under $12,000 he completely gutted and rehabbed his living space in New York mostly by himself in about a year and a half. He reused materials from the gut. He laminated his own countertops. And best (or worst) of all, he lived in the space the whole time.
Obviously he must be very handy with tools and/or figuring things out quickly. His occupation is web deisgn… so maybe he just looked everything up online. I do.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention: the space is super small which attributes to such a low cost rehab. Its basically a studio with a bathroom.
