Flag burning… free speech or jail time? Once again the House of Representatives has voted and passed the ban on burning of the American flag. Each time the proposed amendment has come to the House floor, it has reached the required two-thirds majority.

The next step is sending the bill up to the Senate. Early interviews of the Senate members shows that a majority support this new ammendment idea.

I understand the want and desire to protect our flag. I would not want to burn the flag out of disrespect for our country. But if we ban it then it seems to me that we are one step closer to that whole nonsense story about flushing the Quran down the toilet… International fuss over a symbol.

It is just a symbol, a very important symbol to most, but it is still free speech if you want to disagree and burn the flag. Just pass a law saying that burning of anything in public is illegal, dont stoop to removing the freedoms that make this country what it is: free.

In 1989 they decided that flag burning was considered free speech and protected by the Constitution. Before that it was banned due to war protesters during the Veitnam war era. The Senate will discuss the amendment after the 4th of July holiday… (right after the most patriotic day of the year)

Lets hope its just a phase and we will not lose another of our freedoms.
