This past weekend… National Guard duty weekend. A 3 day waste of time, waste of tax payers money and waste of potential. Shakedown: for those with gear, getting it inventoried. I have no gear assigned yet (even though I have been there for over 5 months). Super slow and extremely inefficient process.
Those of us with no gear had to ‘hide’ and remember ‘out of sight out of mind’ in regards to the higher ranking people walking around. This means sit in a classroom on a plastic chair from about 7 am til about 5:30 pm when everyone might get released… only to come back the next day to do it again. yay.
I spent most of my time sleeping/sweating in my car. Other people spent the whole time sitting by the garage door entrance smoking. I had a pounding headache the entire 11 hours of drill on saturday. yippie. not enough sleep.
Another ‘overnight’ (for no reason) drill on friday. This means sleep in the building on friday obviously. But usually you would think there would be some provisions other than a slab of cold concrete to sleep on. But not here. Bring your own mat, sleeping bag, blanket… whatever. Ive done it twice now, and this wasnt going to be my third. I left, slept at home, and came back early saturday morning (as well as about 85% of everyone else).
Sunday I also made my own schedule. Things started around 7am. Then I was told that we can either wait to get our gear inventoried, or sit in classroom 4. I am not about to spend yet another day sitting in an empty classroom. I gave myself the authority to leave…
