Firemen should not strike. That’s it.
I remember the strike(s) of 77 and back in those days as a mere child it was kind of fun to go to bed with a candle. I fondly remember the torch I had too, it would glow red and green and had a morse button on the handle so that… but I digress. We had a lot of fires back then from candles, my dad left one of ours too near the wall… but we lived. :)
My husband’s solution is to turn the fire service into the same kind of force as the military so that they could not strike. (I imagine “strike” would be renamed mutiny…) I like that idea.
What bugs me is that they have picked a really bad time to do it. If I were a member of the Fire Service I would be ashamed of myself for leaving my people vulnerable. Responsibility! After five years in the Fire Sevice they get more money than my husband did at the end of 22 years in the military. And it’s the military who have to do work they were not trained for (remember foot and mouth?)
The one thing that does concern me, though, is the Channel Tunnel.
